Building Friendships Through Philanthropy

AMVETS Dept. of CA Service Foundation -- $25,000
Welcome Home Program

Program Description: The Welcome Home Program provides formerly homeless Veterans with essential household furnishings as they transition into permanent housing through the HUD-VASH (Veteran Affairs Supportive Housing) program. AMVETS worked directly with VA Case Managers in San Diego County to assess the furniture needs of each Veteran and their families. Once needs are identified and inventory is confirmed, AMVETS volunteers deliver tailored furniture packages—including sofas, tables, beds, bedding, cookware, and more—based on household size.

Results: With its $25,000 grant from the RSF Women’s Fund, AMVETS  was successfully able to meet its goal to fully furnish the homes of 25 newly housed Veterans and was able to extend additional support to several more Veterans. Each delivery included a complete package of:

  • Living room and dining room furniture
  • Beds and bedding
  • Kitchenware and basic household supplies

These home essentials helped Veterans go from sleeping on the floor to living in safe, welcoming, and dignified environments, all essential for long-term housing stability and overall well-being.

Future Plans:  California continues to account for nearly 30% of the nation’s homeless Veteran population. As the VA identifies more Veterans for case-managed housing, AMVETS remains committed to expanding the Welcome Home Program with continued support from donors and community partners. The model is cost-effective, efficient, and deeply impactful, turning housing into a home and supporting Veterans in building lasting stability.
