Meals on Wheels San Diego County -- $50,000 North County Senior Meal Delivery & Supportive Services
Program Description: The grant supported Meals on Wheels San Diego County (MOWSDC) in addressing food insecurity, social isolation, and loss of independence among homebound seniors in North County.
Results/Challenges: The grant focused entirely on direct client service, with food and packaging costs averaging $3.04 per meal. The program successfully delivered 176,137 subsidized meals to 1,354 seniors, with 40% receiving meals at no cost or with enhanced subsidies.
Daily safety checks were performed by trained volunteers, allowing for prompt identification of concerns. When issues arose, MOWSDC’s Care Navigator Team coordinated timely interventions in collaboration with family members, healthcare providers and other community resources.
Survey results showed:
- 81% reported healthier eating
- 75% improved access to affordable meals
- 59% felt better able to live independently
- 42% reported reduced loneliness
Future Sustainability Plans: Managing the rapid growth amid limited funding this year was challenging. Demand for fully subsidized meals through a county program surged by 400% in 5 months, out-pacing capacity, resulting in a waitlist. Shifts in the financial status of seniors meant more relied solely on the fully subsidized county program, opting out of MOWSDC’s traditionally 60%-subsidized option. It scaled efficiently through a new partnership with TRIO Community Meals as of April 1st, which enhanced meal quality and cut costs.
It also collaborated with San Diego Hunger Coalition, Helen Woodward Animal Center, ElderHelp(Fellow RSFWF 2023-24 Grantee) & the City of Carlsbad to enhance and expand its reach.
