Building Friendships Through Philanthropy

Project Next (formerly, The San Marcos Promise) -- $25,000
Empowering High School Students to Succeed Beyond Graduation

Program Description – The Focused Futures program supports high school students facing significant barriers, as they transition into meaningful postsecondary education, training or careers. Through individualized support (including financial aid coaching and post-graduation planning), career exploration (such as Employer Career Chats, Superstrong Interest Inventory evaluations) and real-world skill-building (like resume building, mock interviews, job readiness tools), Project Next served 109 students across five high schools. It accomplished this with the assistance of its extensive network of over 350 partners, including business professionals, postsecondary institutions and community organizations.

Results: The grant covered employee costs for those employees directly associated with the Focused Futures program, in addition to providing support for general programs, dues and field trip. The multi-year program served 109 students, which reported:

  • 96% of students received individual coaching (avg. 4 sessions)
  • 86% completed the SuperStrong Assessment
  • 76% engaged in career research and post-grad planning
  • 50% created resumes
  • 51% participated in Skillshops or Career Chats
  • 43% attended at least one college career event

Furthermore, the 20 seniors reported:

  • 100% engaged in coaching, career research and transition planning
  • 95% completed career assessments
  • 70-75% created resumes, submitted FAFSA and enrolled in community college

Future Plans: In 2025–26, they will pilot a combined model of Focused Futures and their Xcelerate program to better serve students with evolving goals and systemic barriers.
