Wounded Warrior Homes, Inc. -- $75,000
Stabilizing Veterans and Their Dependents via Critical Services

Program Description:

Wounded Warrior Homes (WWH) decreases veteran homelessness and suicide risk, and alleviates hunger in North San Diego County. Its core services include transitional housing, re-integrative case management (RCM) services, and a food pantry for post-9/11 vets and dependents.

Post-9/11 vets with TBI/PTSD are 50% more likely to become homeless than their non-vet peers, and the vet suicide/self-injury mortality rate has been recently recalculated to 44 vets/day. SD County has the largest concentration of military presence worldwide, with over 240K vets plus 100K active-duty Navy and Marine personnel.  Annually, over 15,000 people separate from the military, making San Diego County the number one destination for newly returning vets. SD County has the highest vet suicide rate in the country.

Results:

The program lifted 25 veterans from homelessness, who received support to graduate into stable, thriving lives. Also, 55 veterans received short-term case management to stabilize their health and living conditions. The food pantry alleviated hunger for 200+ low-income veterans and their dependents.

Progress was monitored through daily electronic communications and weekly and monthly face-to-face meetings. Quantitative data included the number of veterans served, length of residency, enrollment/dis-enrollment rates, and goal achievement tracking. Qualitative data included pre-/post-service surveys and anecdotal feedback.

Future Plans:

Wounded Warrior Homes will continue offering and expanding its core services. It is exploring the addition of a second Adult Dwelling Unit for additional housing capacity.

They focus on sustainability by maintaining a strong financial reserve and continuing fundraising efforts and grant applications. They monitor and adapt programs based on veteran needs and feedback. This comprehensive approach ensures the long-term sustainability of the program while continually adapting to the evolving needs of the veteran population.
